New Study Highlights Importance of Outdoor Recess for Increasing Physical Activity

Outdoor play has been shown to support an increase in the quantity and intensity of physical activity, according to a recent study published Nov. 21 in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Preventing Chronic Disease.

The findings were based on measurements taken in urban public school students during indoor and outdoor recess with students wearing an assortment of accelerometer pedometers and heart monitors. Researchers found that, more than recess held in a gym or classroom, outdoor recess yielded greater heart rates and more steps taken.

“In summary, outdoor recess provided the optimal environment for children to engage in quality physical activity.
