With spring in full swing, why not recommit to getting some regular physical activity during the day? May is a perfect time to get outdoors with family, school classrooms and communities to enjoy the benefits of being active.
The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition sponsors National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in May with some great ideas for how communities, health professionals and families can raise awareness about the benefits of physical activity and have plenty of fun in the process. Check out their web page for resources, including tips on how to host a community event to promote family-friendly fitness.
And all you physical fitness champs out there might also want to check out the new SHAPE America website (formerly the American Alliance for Healthy, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance or AAHPERD) to learn more about how they are promoting National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. They’re using the month of May in particular to celebrate the power of dance to bring fun and fitness to children and adults. Among its partner programs, SHAPE America has teamed up with the First Lady’s Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative to bring physical activity back to America’s schools.
And lastly, everyone needs a little playtime in their day. The folks at Playworks have a great Playworks Playbook with game ideas, a toolkit, helpful success stories and other resources to help you and those around you become “a positive, playful force in your community.”
Okay, enough studying now. Get out there and get active!
