If you notice more kids than usual walking to and from school on the first Wednesday in October, it may be because it is Walk to School Day, an annual event that encourages students, families, school leaders, community partners and city leaders to celebrate the benefits of walking to school.

Over twenty years ago, the first Walk to School Day event sought to build awareness for the need for walkable communities. That one-day event has evolved into a movement, as many people now advocate for walking or biking to school as a way for children to incorporate regular physical activity into their school days.

Consider creating a walking school bus with the kids and families who live in your neighborhood to make walking to school safer and more fun.
