Earlier this month, 879 schools across 30 states were recognized as “America’s Healthiest Schools,” an annual recognition program from Alliance for a Healthier Generation that honors schools across the country for achievements in supporting the comprehensive health needs of students and staff.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a children’s health organization that has had a partnership with Kaiser Permanente Thriving Schools for nearly 10 years. They work with Kaiser Permanente, and other national partner organizations to advance health in schools. Healthier Generation awards schools across nine topic areas related to advancing the physical, mental, and social-emotional health of students, teachers, staff, and families. Thriving Schools is proud to sponsor two of the award categories: “Strengthening Social-Emotional Health and Learning” and “Cultivating Staff Well-Being,” Both of which reinforce our commitment to mental health and teacher and staff wellness.
The 2024 awardees make up the largest overall total in the history of the program. Of these, 357 were recognized for the Kaiser Permanente-sponsored staff well-being category, and 182 for the Kaiser Permanente-sponsored social-emotional health and learning category, both increased from the previous year.
“Schools today are facing unprecedented hurdles, from chronic absence and youth trauma to staff burnout, and so much more,” said Annie Reed, DrPH, MPP, executive director for Kaiser Permanente Youth and School Engagement. “Healthy schools have a critical role in supporting students and staff where it matters. These incredible award-winners are addressing some of the most critical issues head on, paving a path where every school succeeds, every employee excels, and every child thrives – and we could not be happier to shine a light on their accomplishments.”
The details and stories behind the winning schools, many of whom receive support through Kaiser Permanente during the year, are among the most powerful examples of how administrators and educators are making a difference in the future of their students and colleagues.
Last year, we shared more about why Carlos Santana Arts Academy is using community collaboration in North Hill, California, and how Elizabeth Andrews High School outside of Atlanta, Georgia is supporting students on their journey towards graduation. We were also able to spotlight how Swallows Charter Academy in Pueblo, Colorado boosts staff morale, and why Audubon Elementary in Spokane, Washington focuses on food security.
We look forward to telling the stories of our 2024 America’s Healthiest Schools winners across the Kaiser Permanente footprint. Stay tuned to our blog!
