Encourage your school community to stay active by making physical activity a priority. By finding creative ways to integrate physical activity into learning, exercise becomes part of the daily routine for students, staff and teachers.
Why we care (and why you should, too)
Schools play a critical role in promoting physically active and teaching youth how to be physically active for a lifetime. Schools are an ideal setting for teaching youth how to adopt and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle through quality Physical Education, active and engaging recess, physical activity breaks, walk- and bike-to-school programs and out-of-school sports and activity programs.
The benefits of getting the recommended 60 minutes or more of physical activity are numerous and include:
- Helping reduce the risk of developing obesity or chronic diseases, such as diabetes; it may be the only physical activity a child gets in his or her day
- Improving strength and endurance, helping to build healthy bones and muscles, and also teaching kids the benefits of regular physical activity
- Supporting students’ academic performance including academic achievement and grades, academic behavior, and concentration and attentiveness
